Tamil Nadu were in a spot of bother in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final facing a tough opposition in Bengal, electing to bat first they weren’t off to a poor start with both the openers departing by the time they had added 26 runs on the board. Dinesh Karthik who has manned the No.3 spot for the team in the entire tournament led their batting charge from the front.

In a game where only one other batsman managed to score a half century Karthik scored a hundred, he was the last man to get out for 112 as Tamil Nadu were dismissed for 217. He was out on a Mohammed Shami delivery hit-wicket, talking about it after the game, the 31-year-old said, “Funny isn’t it? I am yet to see the dismissal, but it’s strange that I find ways of getting out. I still can’t believe that I hit the stumps,”

Shami was making a comeback in this match and bowled well to return with a four-wicket haul, Ashok Dinda had right through the tournament given Bengal breakthrough starts and they made life difficult for the TN batsmen in the final. “With the likes of Dinda, Shami, and Kanishka (Seth), Bengal have a really good bowling unit at their disposal. Dinda, in particular, bowled really well, getting three wickets upfront. Batting in the first innings was a challenge,” he said.

He ended the tournament as the highest run-getter scoring more than 600 runs which include two centuries and three half-centuries. Karthik was extremely satisfied to have got in an invaluable hundred in the final from a position where the team was struggling and though he doesn’t remember a lot of knocks from the past rates it at par given the game and the situation in which he got those runs.

“My memory is very poor, and I don’t remember too many of my innings in the past. However, to score those runs in a big final, when your team is struggling against a good bowling attack, gives me tremendous satisfaction,” DK said.

He is a naturally aggressive batsman who loves to play his shots, has enough to even play the ramp shot and the cheeky ones and this is what has brought him the success with the bat. Pondering over his batting style the wicketkeeper-batsman said, “I have played like that pretty much throughout the tournament, where I have trusted my skills. I have not tried to change my batting skills, so it has given me a lot of success. I have kept playing in the same tempo.”

Unlike most out of favor cricketers who do not admit their aspirations of making a comeback in the national team, Karthik said that every time he is playing for his domestic side or in the IPL his aim is to do good enough to make his way back in the Indian team. “I am not going to lie. Yes, my aim is always to play for India. Even when you are playing in the IPL or for your state, you are always looking to perform well so that you get picked for your country.” He added.

Karthik wants to focus on the upcoming Deodhar Trophy for now where the domestic List A champions TN will take on India Red and Blue. “I am not looking at the IPL right now. I just want to relax and concentrate on the upcoming Deodhar Trophy. It’s (IPL) there at the back of my mind, but it’s too early to think about such a big tournament right now,” he added.
