Australian skipper Steve Smith continued his outstanding run in Test cricket with yet another gritty knock an unbeaten 178 in the first inning of the third Test match against India. With his inspirational knock at Ranchi, Smith moved up to the third position in the exclusive list of Australian captains with most runs against the Indians.
The fidgety batsman led the team from the front and played a captain’s knock which saw the Australians reach a comforting score of 451 in their first innings. Smith stood like a brick wall on the pitch and dispatched 17 boundaries on his way to 178*. He handled the Indian spin attack with ease which had been a worry for the Australians in the past two Tests with the pitch turning square.
He used a total of 361 deliveries to score the commendable score. The century marks the 27-year old’s second century in the tour and 19th of his Test career as he continues to prove time and time again why he aces the Test rankings for the batsmen. Smith was brilliantly supported by Glenn Maxwell from the other end with the later also completing his century to pierce his way into the list of batsmen to score centuries in all three formats of the game.
The current Aussie skipper has rooted his position on the third spot in the list of Australian skippers to score most runs against India and is just behind Michael Clarke and RB Simpson. In the 6 Test matches he has played against India, Smith has taken the crease 11 times scoring a mammoth 905 runs.
Clarke and Simpson obviously have scored over a thousand runs against India but Smith has achieved the feat way faster than them both. He averages a whopping 90.50 against the Indians which is second to only the legendary Don Bradman whose average lies at an untouchable 178.75 while facing the Indian team.
