India Women head coach Amol Muzumdar is keeping a close eye on the ongoing Women’s Premier League 2024, as he aims to build a pool of 20-25 players to select from for international cricket. While commentating on the game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Giants, Muzjumdar mentioned that he is also keeping at the pacers to strengthen the bowling attack of the national team.

Notably, among pacers, Arundhati Reddy and Renuka Singh Thakur have done well while spinners like Asha Sobhana and Radha Yadav have done a commendable job. He expects more players to step up in the coming matches, which will give the national selectors a lot of players to choose from.

“I would want another pool of 20-25 players to create a bench strength for the Indian team. Four fast bowlers played the last series, I want to create a pool of fast bowlers (from the WPL). It makes a lot of difference if you strengthen the bowling attack,” Muzumdar was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Sajana's six gives you an idea of depth of Indian cricket: Muzumdar

Mumbai Indians’ Sanjeevan Sajana made the headlines during their opening match against Delhi Capitals. Five runs were required off the last ball and Sajana, who was about to face his first delivery, launched it over mid-on to hit a six and win the game in Mumbai’s favour. Lauding Sajana for her impact, Muzumdar stated that her performance shows the depth of Indian cricket.

“Sajana's six gives you an idea of the depth in Indian cricket,” Muzumdar said.

The 49-year-old also revealed how Satheesh Shubha came into the scheme of things. Muzumdar mentioned that she batted really well in a four-day warm-up match, which impressed him a lot. He added that upon talking to skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, it was decided that she would make her debut against England.

“I organised a match at the NCA here at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. It was a four-day warm-up match and she (Shubha) did very well there - she scored 99 and 50. She's a left-hander and bats well at No. 3. After seeing her in the nets I had decided to bat her at No. 3. Not many players had seen her at the time. I'll thank Harman (India captain Harmanpreet Kaur) because she agreed for the call immediately,” Muzumdar concluded.
