Both Mumbai Indians (MI) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will be playing their last league match of IPL 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. MI are already out of playoff contention while LSG have a minuscule mathematical chance to qualify.

MI's last match was a rain-curtailed affair against KKR at Kolkata. MI made early inroads, but Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana helped KKR recover before a final flourish by Andre Russell, Rinku Singh, and Ramandeep Singh lifted KKR to 157 in a 16-over match. Ishan Kishan started MI's innings with a flourish but the other batters lost their way through the middle with Varun Chakravarthy, Andre Russell, and Harshit Rana contributing to the win for KKR.

LSG are now on a three-match losing streak, incidentally, their last win was against MI in the reverse fixture. In their last game, LSG started strongly with the ball against DC, but Abhishek Porel and Shai Hope stabilized the Capitals innings from where Rishabh Pant took over the mantle. But it was ultimately Tristan Stubbs' final flourish that was the keynote of Delhi's batting that pushed them past the 200-run mark. Ishant Sharma then wrecked LSG's top order before Nicholas Pooran inspired some hope into the LSG innings but after his dismissal, it looked bleak until Arshad Khan hit another fifty that looked like it could take the match close, LSG ultimately lost by 19 runs.

The loss to DC has put LSG's chances of direct qualification into jeopardy, and they will need a few miracles to qualify for the playoffs. MI on the other hand will want to end a very forgettable season on a winning note.

Wankhede Stadium Pitch Report:

The surface here is mainly known to be flat, but this season, the nature of the pitch has been all over the place with some flat and some other not-so-flat pitches. In the last few matches, the surface has shed its batting-friendly nature for a more bowler-friendly low-scoring surface. The surface is expected to provide a fairer balance between bat and ball.

MI vs LSG Strategies & Match-ups:

On a more bowler-friendly surface, LSG's bowlers will enjoy bowling to MI's out-of-form top order. This means that MI's bowling, especially at the top of the innings will have to step up as that might be MI's best chance at making a match out of this. The main strategy is pitting the bowling attacks against each other. The important matchups for this match are: Jasprit Bumrah vs KL Rahul, Piyush Chawla vs Nicholas Pooran, Nuwan Thushara vs Marcus Stoinis, Arshad Khan vs Rohit Sharma, Ravi Bishnoi vs Suryakumar Yadav

Player Battles to Watch Out For:

KL Rahul vs Jasprit Bumrah:

Against Bumrah, Rahul has scored 146 runs in 117 balls while being dismissed twice at an average of 73. The strike rate of 124.78 does not inspire much confidence especially when the LSG skipper is struggling with lack of form.

Suryakumar Yadav vs Ravi Bishnoi:

So far in the IPL, Yadav has scored 39 runs in 32 balls against Bishnoi while being dismissed thrice. The average of 13 and strike rate of 121.87 might be cause for concern as Yadav is one of the only batters being consistent for MI

X-Factors for MI vs LSG:

Mumbai Indians:

On a surface likely to be more bowler-friendly than usual, Jasprit Bumrah, who is currently the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament, will be the mainstay and the lynchpin of MI's chances of winning the match.

Lucknow Super Giants:

With their top order being out of form, LSG need Nicholas Pooran's hitting abilities at the end to provide some respectability to their batting, and he has been doing that all season. While LSG's chances of qualifying for the playoffs are only mathematical now, they will want to end on a win, and Nicholas Pooran will be the cornerstone to that.
