India have grabbed the early honours on the tour by winning the T20I series against England as the teams will now lock horns in the One-Day Internationals. The first of the three matches will be played at the record-breaking Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Thursday. The visitors would be keen on continuing their winning run and their opponents will feel they can get better of the Men in Blue in the 50-overs format. However, a thrilling contest is on the cards for the fans as they wait eagerly for the action to begin.

Eoin Morgan and his men must have realised that this Indian team is not in the country only to make up the numbers and they are a force to reckon with. They fought tooth and nail in the T20Is but the 50-overs format will be a completely different ball game. England have been in excellent form and are coming on the back of a 5-0 series win over their arch-rivals Australia. They only need to continue what they did right against them and the results will follow.

India, on the other hand, have a lot to ponder with their number 4 conundrum in the batting line-up which is yet to be solved. They have amazing confidence in their abilities which make them one of the best sides in the world but Virat Kohli’s troops will have to give their best shot in order to get past this England outfit. Moreover, the absence of Jasprit Bumrah has left them vulnerable in the death overs which their opponents will be aware of.

Pitch and conditions

When the venue for the game is Trent Bridge, expect the runs to flow from the willow. There will be a lot of fours and sixes only if the curators don’t decide to surprise one and all at the eleventh hour. England created a world record in the previous ODI played here. Though there is a less possibility of such a score to be gunned down again for any team soon, expect fireworks for sure.

England

Ben Stokes is back for the hosts and he walks into the playing XI on any given day. Alex Hales will be the unlucky player to be left out for him as Moeen Ali should return after warming the bench in the T20Is. Joe Root will slot back in at number 3 with Eoin Morgan and Stokes to follow. Jos Buttler and Ali will provide the finishing touches in the death overs.

The bowling attack is under pressure as the opposition also possesses a similar kind of batting line-up. The team management should keep faith on David Willey and Liam Plunkett who did so well against Australia. Also, Mark Wood will also be back as the third seamer. England can also decide to surprise the visitors by including Sam Curran as they are vulnerable against the left-arm pace.

The five-bowler theory has gone well for India so far. Virat Kohli, as a captain, loves to stick to what he likes which should mean Suresh Raina will be benched for this game and Dinesh Karthik might finally get a chance to prove himself at number 6. KL Rahul should take up the number 4 position in the line-up and shut the debate once and for all with the form he is in.

India will definitely miss the services of Jasprit Bumrah which should mean Umesh Yadav has to open the bowling for the team. There is a question mark over the fitness of Bhuvneshwar Kumar still and Siddarth Kaul might make his ODI debut if he fails to recover. The spin-twins Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav should be back to torment England batsmen much like they did in South Africa.
