Harbhajan Singh, the veteran Indian off-spinner, will lead Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which will start from February 25, 2017. The Punjab squad was announced on Tuesday, which consisted of 16 players. Harbhajan did lead Punjab during the Ranji season but missed quite a number of matches owing to injury in the initial phase. The tournament will be an opportunity for many players to prove their mettle and make it to the Indian squad, particularly with Champions Trophy around the corner.

The Punjab squad also has Yuvraj Singh, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Sandeep Sharma and Mandeep Singh, who have all represented India in ODIs. The tournament will be particularly important for Yuvraj Singh, who has made it big in international cricket once again with his strong performances against England in T20. The star player is trying to cement his place in the Indian 50-over squad, particularly for the Champions Trophy. His explosive century versus England brought back memories of the threat he still possesses for oppositions.

Punjab has a strong outfit with players who have been performing consistently well in the domestic circuit like openers Jivanjot Singh, Manan Vohra and pacer Siddharth Kaul. As for the captain Harbhajan, he had an average domestic season and would be keen to improve his numbers to knock on the Indian dressing room once again.

Punjab will play their first match against Vidarbha on February 25th in New Delhi. They are placed in Group C along with Odisha, Railways, Assam, Baroda and Haryana. Punjab will be hoping to top the group and make it to the quarter-finals without sweating it out much. The final of the 24-team tournament will be held on March 18th.
