Former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs was well known for his aggressive stroke play on the field and a quirky spark off it. The man who smashed six sixes in a World Cup game celebrates his 43rd birthday today and he didn’t miss out on launching one more at the expense of none other than the ICC on his special day.

The official ICC Twitter handle wished Gibbs a prosperous day on but made a typo by cutting down a digit from his ODI run tally. The former South African batter was quick to shoot a pun and replied to the ICC’s official page stating ” I think I might have got a few more ODI runs than that”. It didn’t take much time for ICC to correct the statistics and the typo was corrected shortly.

Gibbs had his share of laugh and thanked the ICC for the warm wishes. The South African has played over 90 Test matches, scoring 6167 runs at an average of 41.95 along with 14 centuries and 26 fifties. In ODI’s, he has fetched 8094 runs from 248 games at an average of 36.13. He has scored 21 hundreds and 37 fifties to his credit. He was one of Proteas’ sharpest fielder during his playing days.

The Cape Town born right-handed batsman has featured in some of the most historic games, one of them being South Africa’s record chase of 435 runs against Australia at Wanderers during the year 2006. Gibbs scored a match winning 175 runs off 111 balls during that high voltage match.

His career was also blotted with controversies; his name was dragged on match fixing scandals and on other occasions, he was involved in troubled nightlife incidents. His autobiography ‘ To the Point: The No-Holds-Barred-Autobiography’ gives an account of his both good and dark days. It takes the reader’s to his wild days and how he has made an effort to turn into one of the best international player for South Africa.
