The action moved to Cuttack as England took on India in the second ODI of the three-match series. The match promised to be big entertainment after the kind of show both teams had put up at Pune in the first ODI. Coming into the game, India were clear favorites to win but the visitors were definitely not to be taken lightly. The hosts made one change in the lineup with Bhuvneshwar Kumar coming in for Umesh Yadav. England roped in the services of Liam Plunkett in the match to beef up their bowling line up. They asked India to bat first and were on top of the game at a stage when India reeled 25/3.

However, it was all about some vintage Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni in the match. A mammoth 256 runs stand between the two propelled India to a gigantic total of 381/6 in their stipulated 50 overs. England replied firmly with opener Jason Roy and one down batsman Joe Root striking fifties. The impetus was provided by skipper Eoin Morgan though. A brilliant 102 from the skipper got the English team quite close. However, 381 on the board was a little too much. Despite a few key contributions, they eventually fell short by 15 runs.

Some played well, some had a disappointing day from the visitors’ point of view.

Here are the England player ratings from the 2nd ODI between India and England:

Jason Roy – 7/10

Opener Jason Roy had a brilliant time with the bat yet again. The attacking English opener struck a timely fifty yet again at the top order. He lost the support of Alex Hales early in the innings but continued to parade along.

Roy added 100 runs with Joe Root for the second wicket and the 42 with skipper Eoin Morgan for the third wicket. He ended up with 82 runs to his name in 73 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes. He surely has been the best batsman for England on the tour thus far.

Alex Hales – 2/10

Opener Alex Hales had a poor game at Cuttack. His dismal show in the series continued. While his opening partner Jason Roy has been plundering runs at will, Hales has found it hard to keep his feet going in the middle.

Another poor match beckoned for him here as well. Despite a good start with 3 fours to his name, he could score just 14 in the match. He was dismissed on 14 off 12 balls by Jasprit Bumrah.

Joe Root – 6.5/10

Arguably the best batsman in the English lineup, Root always comes in with a lot of expectations on him. Very rarely does the middle-order batsman disappoint. He got a good start yet again. He shared a century stand with Jason Roy. En route the steady partnership, he reached his fifty as well.

However, he perished soon after. For a batsman of his calibre, these fifties won’t help the cause of the English side. This has been the story of the tour so far – Root scoring fifty and England still losing.

Eoin Morgan – 8/10

Eoin Morgan redefined the adage of ‘skipper leading from the front’. Coming in at number 4, Morgan took his time to settle in. Once he found his feet going, he shifted his gears very efficiently. He ended up scoring a ton albeit in a losing cause.

Morgan scored 102 off 81 balls with 6 fours and 5 sixes before being dismissed in the penultimate over. It was only unfortunate that he could not finish the game for his side.

Ben Stokes – 1/10

Perhaps the most hyped player from the English side on the tour, Ben Stokes had a forgettable time in Cuttack ODI. Stokes leaked 79 runs in the 9 overs that he bowled. He looked largely ineffective with the ball as his economy rate showed 8.78 in the scorecard.

Later when he came in to bat, he had a short stay at the crease. He had to walk back on 1 after playing just 3 deliveries. He was cleaned up by Ravichandran Ashwin.

Jos Buttler – 2/10

Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler is yet to make a mark on the tour. He had a poor Test series back in December last year. Came the ODIs, the assumed forte for him, but the fortunes do not seem to change. He came in after the dismissal of Ben Stokes at number 6.

The hosts hoped for someone to show resistance as they were losing grip on the game. Buttler was surely not the man who did that. He struck a four in his 9-ball 10. His stay was cut short as he was stumped on a wide delivery by R Ashwin.

Moeen Ali – 7/10

Moeen Ali played a very good cameo in the later part of the English innings. The visitors were slowly creeping out of the game after the Indian spinners were holding a tight grip on the proceedings.

It was then that Ali stitched a handy partnership with skipper Eoin Morgan. He bludgeoned a powerful 55 off just 43 runs with 6 fours to his name. However, his efforts could not be enough for the visiting team.

Chris Woakes – 8/10

Chris Woakes was perhaps the best bowler on the day for the England team. He started off exceedingly well with maidens to his name. He bowled 3 maidens in his spell of 10 overs on the day. He jolted India with three key wickets at the start of the innings.

He dismissed Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the same over to have India on the back foot. He conceded 60 runs for his 4 wickets in his spell of 10 overs.

Liam Plunkett – 2.5/10

Liam Plunkett had an embarrassing game of cricket in the ODI at Cuttack. He was taken away for 91 runs in 10 overs. Both Yuvraj and Dhoni took the special liking to his bowling and his economy rate reflected the same.

He missed his lines as well and bowled 4 wides on the day. He managed to clean up the stumps of Dhoni but on a no ball. He managed to take two wickets in the end that earns him a few ratings.

David Willey – 3/10

David Willey had a rather surprising time at the middle. He was given just 5 overs on the day in the match. He shared the new ball with Chris Woakes but was given only half the share of his quota. He bowled 5 overs for the 32 runs that he gave.

He went wicketless on the day. It is hard to comprehend why he was not given his entire quota of overs. He could have been handy in the death overs given his recent form.

Jake Ball – 1/10

Jake Ball is yet another bowler who had a poor time in the match. He was taken for aplenty in his bowling overs. Along with Liam Plunkett, Ball leaked runs that eventually hurt England. What went worse for the man was that he went wicketless.

In the 10 overs that he bowled, he gave away 80 runs. The visitors will hope that he comes up good in the matches to follow. Only that can help them change their fortunes.
