Former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara is undoubtedly one of the finest left handed batsmen to have ever played the game. Despite having retired from the international cricket over a year ago, the elegant batsman continues to play his trade in different T20 leagues around the world. Currently, he is leading the Karachi Kings in the ongoing second edition of the Pakistan Super League. On 23 February, when he stepped on the field for the Kings against the Quetta Gladiators, he entered the record books.

He became only the 16th player and the second Asian batsman to play 1000 professional matches. He joined the elite list that has his former Sri Lanka team mate Mahela Jayawardene in the list. Mahela Jayawardene was the firstt Asian to accomplish the rare feat. His career has spanned for close to a decade and a half and that serves as the time frame during which the southpaw played the game of cricket.

Among the notable mentions, he has 587 matches to his name that he has played for the Sri Lankan national side across the three formats of the game. He has been a veteran player when it comes to the Indian Premier League as well. He started off with 25 matches for the Deccan Chargers, where he even led the team. He then capped for the Kings XI Punjab – a team that had 37 matches as service from Kumar Sangakkara. He played a handful of matches for the Sunrisers Hyderabad too.

Over the last couple of years, he has been a part of the formidable Dhaka Dynamites outfit in the Bangladesh Premier League. Last year, he had emerged as one of the top run getters of the BPL. Talking about PSL, he had played for the Quetta Gladiators in the inaugural edition of the tournament. Ironically, it is the same Quetta Gladiators that he is playing against in his 1000th professional match.
