The Cricket Board of Tasmania has appointed former Australian batsman Mike Hussey to lead an independent study on the Male pathway and High-performance programme of the Tasmanian state. The move is a result of a string of poor performances by the Tasmanian team and also to shake-up things for the welfare of the state cricket.

Tasmania Tigers failed to make it to the finals of the Matador One-Day Cup last October after a poor performance in the Sheffield Shield. Also, the Tigers’ sacked their coach, Dan Marsh, after having failed miserably in the premier One-day tournament in the country in the last four years.

“The purpose of the review is to ensure that Cricket Tasmania’s pathway and High Performance structures are providing the best opportunity for elite talent to be identified, nurtured, progressed and maintained and capable of achieving the goals of the Cricket Tasmania strategic plan,” said Cricket Tasmania in a statement on Friday (March 24).

Hussey, having retired from all formats of the game had taken the role of a Director for the Sydney Thunders last season during the Big Bash. He further hopes to help the Tasmanian cricket to put a structure in place which would assist the progress of the State cricket.

The former batsman would review the existing programmes and structure before providing his recommendation for further development, also to ensure that the State is adequately funded. Tigers’ have often provided the Australian team with great players like Ricky Pointing, George Bailey, and James Faulkner to name a few.

This will also mark the second time that Hussey would be working close with Cricket Australia after his brief stint as the assistant coach for the Australian A team in 2016.

Chairman of Cricket Tasmania Andrew Gaggin has expressed his pleasure over the appointment of Hussey, but laid emphasis upon the need for a better structure at the State for the improvement of their cricket.
