On this Day: Rohit Sharma Smashed World’s Highest Individual Score in ODIs: Exactly a year ago, on this day, Rohit Sharma smashed world record 264 run knock (highest ODI individual score by any batsman) against Sri Lanka at the historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Though, the top-order batsman is playing for India for more than the past half-decade in 50-over format but this particular innings cemented his spot vehemently in the India’s squad for the days to come. Batting first, India put a huge total of 404 for 5 after 50-over and in reply the entire Sri-Lanka got bowled out for just 251 runs on the board.

Rohit Sharma’s mammoth innings saw the most devastating innings from this classy-talented batsman as he kept hitting every ball with astute timing. His 173-ball knock consisted of 33 fours and 9 big sixes. It was only at the last ball of the innings that the Mumbai batsman got out. Interestingly, it was the second occasion when Rohit Sharma successfully crossed 200-run-mark twice in his illustrious ODI career.

After the dismissal of Rahane (28) and Rayudu (8) at cheap scores, India were desperately looking for a partnership and thanks to Virat Kohli who played a blitzkrieg knock of 66 off just 34 balls while adding 202-run partnership for the third wicket with Rohit Sharma. This stand eventually took the game out of hands of the visitors as India went to add 62 runs from 4-over at 15-runs per over.

India won the match convincingly at the end with the fiery spell of Dhawal Kulkarni’s 4 for 34. Sri-Lanka got all-out for just 251 and conceded 154-run victory to India.  Rohit Sharma was awarded Man-of-the-match for his valiant 264-run knock.
