The 10,000 run mark beckons for Alastair Cook. Barely 20 runs away from the landmark, it begs to ask the question: What next? Retire with all the laurels of England cricket perhaps? The next milestone for Cook should he continue his liaison with the England team may well be the most runs in Test cricket record held by Sachin.

Alastair Cook’s current numbers put him on top of the tree as England’s highest run-getter. In broader terms, Cook is the highest run getter of all those players who haven’t retired already. The southpaw has years of cricket left in front of him given the fact that he is only 31-years old.

Cook’s Test form has perhaps been good all his life. Having made his debut all those years ago in 2006 at Nagpur against India, he made a name for himself with an impressive 60 on debut against a vicious spin attack consisting of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh. Since then, he has worked his way up the ladder to become the skipper of the England side, taking over from his partner-in-crime Andrew Strauss.

He also became the youngest player to compile 7000 runs in Test cricket at the age of 28 against India at Kolkata. His finest moment came in the 2011-12 Ashes series where he came good on a host of promises, scoring an incredible 766 runs in seven innings to anchor England’s first series win in Australia for 24 years.

Although he is not the run machine Sachin Tendulkar was, he will need to be at the peak of his form for at least another 5 years to surpass the master blaster. However, one thing is for certain, that his unwavering focus on Test cricket has got him to the 10,000 run mark. The previous top run scorer for England was Graham Gooch with 8900 runs. Now with the 10,000 run monkey almost off his back, it remains to be seen if he can get past Sachin Tendulkar’s mark of 15,921 runs in the near future.

We would like the fans to put out their opinions, do you think Alastair Cook can breach Sachin Tendulkar’s most Test runs record? Vote:
