The 9th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is underway and the race for the playoffs, Purple Cap and the Orange Cap is getting intense. IPL 9 promises to live up to its expectations and deliver quality cricket along with entertainment. Eight teams are fighting it out for top honors with several Indian and overseas stars showcasing their talents. The Purple Cap is the award presented to the leading wicket taker in the IPL and at this moment, there are five candidates who are looking as the favorites to bag the Purple Cap.

Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Andre Russell has been in top form for the 2014 champions. He has not only contributed with the bat but has been the new ball bowler for KKR. On most occasions, he has delivered for his side and picked up wickets in the powerplay. He has a four-wicket haul to his name in the tournament and is looking to be one of the top contenders for the Purple Cap.

Mumbai Indians’ Mitch McClenaghan has shouldered the responsibility of being the spearhead of the Mumbai bowling lineup in the absence of Lasith Malinga. McClenaghan has already had a long hold on the cap in the tournament so far. The Kiwi pacer has been used wisely by his skipper and often comes up in the middle overs to give crucial breakthroughs.

Royal Challengers Bangalore have had a horrid run with the ball this season. Despite trying all their combinations, nothing seemed to click for them in the bowling department. It is one man, Shane Watson, who has held the bowling fort for them. Watson might have been expensive at times but has always got wickets for his captain. He is the leading wicket-taker for the RCB in this season so far and off late, he has come out really good with his cutters. The experienced Aussie campaigner has used all his guile and precision to best use.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar from the Sunrisers Hyderabad was going through a lean patch prior to this edition of the IPL. However, the tournament has marked to be the return of arguably India’s best swing bowler, Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Kumar has not just picked up wickets up front but has been a miser in giving away runs too. He has been bowling maidens, picking up wickets and containing batsmen in the death. He surely looks a top contender for the Purple cap.

The bowling sensation from Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman, has been a revelation for the Sunrisers Hyderabad this season. He has the best economy rate in the tournament so far and has troubled all batsmen alike. He looks formidable with his cutters, slower balls and yorkers in his repertoire. Such has been his popularity in this tournament, that he has received praises from stalwarts of the game. Owing to his consistent performance thus far, he is also tipped to make it big in the Big Bash League. For now, he is a sure shot contender for the Purple Cap. His wicket-taking ability makes him the top contender for the coveted cap.

Among others who can give a tough run to the above five are Jasprit Bumrah, Dwayne Bravo, Amit Mishra and Dhawal Kulkarni. We let you take the call, vote for the bowler who you think deserves or has the best chance of winning the Purple cap at the end of the season.
