The Ranji Trophy 2016-17 season came to an end with Gujarat being crowned as champions for the very first time as they defeated the defending champions and the Ranji trophy stalwart, Mumbai team by 5 wickets in a well-fought finale. The season witness the tournament being played at neutral venues for the first time which forced the declination of a couple of top teams and turned out to be the one for the smaller teams as they recorded their best performance. Here we look at all the stats and records set during the interesting Ranji Trophy season.

2 – Number of Gujarat batsmen who aggregated over 900 in this season. Priyank Panchal scored 1310 runs while Gohel finished with 914 runs. Before this season, Parthiv Patel had scored 895 runs in the 2012/13 season and was the only player from Gujarat to score over 800 runs in a Ranji Trophy season.

4 – Number of times Abhinav Mukund  scored more than 800 runs in a Ranji Trophy season including this, the most times by any player. Vinod Kambli and Ajay Sharma did it in three seasons.

5 – Number of centuries Priyank Panchal scored in this season, the most by anyone. His 5 centuries are the joint 3rd most for anyone in a Ranji season. VVS Laxman (8 tons in 1999-00) and Kedar Jadhav (6 tons in 2013-14) have more than 5 centuries in a Ranji season.

5 – Number of triple centuries were scored in this season, the joint-most in a Ranji Trophy season. 2012/13 season also witness 5 triple tons.

5 – Number of players who scored 300+ runs and took 300+ wickets in this season. They are- Parvez Rasool, Kuldeep Yadav, CV Milind, S Jakati and Karn Sharma. Previously not more than 3 players have done this feat in a single season.

9 – Number of fifty plus scores Priyank Panchal and Services’ player G Rahul Singh scored in this season, the most by anyone else. These are also the joint 2nd most fifty plus scores in a Ranji season for a player. Three players scored 11 fifty plus scores in a Ranji season which is the most.

14 – Number of sixes Ishan Kishan hit against Delhi, the joint most by anyone in a Ranji Trophy innings. He equaled Shakti Singh’s record in 1990/91 Ranji season which is also a first-class record for an Indian.

17 – Catches taken by Ishank Jaggi this season, the most by anyone in 2016/17 Ranji Trophy.

17y 53d – Age at which Prithvi Shaw made his debut for Mumbai in semi-final against Tamil Nadu. He became the youngest batsman to score a century in Ranji Trophy knockout, the youngest to score a 4th innings ton in Ranji Trophy and the 2nd youngest to score a century on debut for Mumbai.

20 – Balls taken by Rishabh Pant for his fifty against Jharkhand in 2nd innings, the joint 3rd fastest known fifty in a Ranji game. Bandeep Singh took 15 balls for his fifty in last season while Shakti Singh and Yusuf Pathan have 18-ball fifties to their name.

21 – Number of sixes Rishabh Pant hit in a game against Jharkhand this season. These are not only the most in any game in Ranji Trophy history by a player but also the 2nd most by a player in a first-class game.

36 – Himachal Pradesh’s total of 36 against Hyderabad at Guwahati is the lowest total for any team in the season. This is also the 4th lowest total in Ranji trophy in this century.

48 – Balls taken by Rishabh Pant for his century in the 2nd innings against Jharkhand. This is the fastest known century in Ranji Trophy history and also the fastest ever by an Indian in first-class cricket.

49 – Catches taken by Aditya Tare as wicketkeeper in this season, the most by any keeper in a Ranji Trophy season. Previous highest was 45 catches by Tare himself in the previous season and KS Bharat in 2014/15.

53 – Dismissals effected by Aditya Tare in this season, the most by anyone. In fact, he became the first wicketkeeper to effect 50 dismissals in a Ranji season. Previous highest was 48 dismissals by Tare himself in the previous season.

56 – Wickets taken Shahbaz Nadeem in this season, the most by any bowler. Only 6 bowlers have taken more wickets in a Ranji trophy season than Nadeem.

359* – Samit Gohel’s innings of 359* against Odisha is the highest individual score in this Ranji season. This is also the 5th highest individual score for a player in Ranji Trophy.

594* – Partnership stand for the 3rd wicket between Maharashtra pair of Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne against Delhi in this season is the highest overall stand for any wicket in Ranji Trophy history and the 2nd highest in first-class cricket.

670 – Punjab’s total of 670 against Baroda at Delhi is the highest team total in this season. 7 scores of 600+ have been recorded but none of them went past the 700-run mark.

974 – Runs scored by Rishabh Pant in this Ranji season. Had he scored 26 more, he would have been the youngest in Ranji Trophy history to aggregate 1000 runs in a season.

1310 – Runs scored by Priyank Panchal in the season, the 3rd most by any player in a Ranji Trophy season. Only VVS Laxman (1415) and Shreyas Iyer (1321) have aggregated more runs in a Ranji season than Panchal.
