There is some good news for the “Nawab of Najafgarh” who just yesterday celebrated his 36th birthday. If the news that we hear are to be believed, the dashing opening batsman might be considered for the Australia series later this year as an additional opener.

The selectors are looking forward to observing Sehwag’s game as the North Zone team prepares for their Duleep Trophy tie. This is prominent from the fact that during the selection meeting for the picking the squad of the north zone team, the selectors opted for Sehwag inspite of their being younger options like Unmukt Chand and Manan Vohra.

While Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay are the automatic choices for the opening slot for the Australia test series, Viru will be in as the third opener. However, his biggest competitor for that slot is his long time friend and Delhi team-mate Gautam Gambhir.

“If he is fit and motivated, he could be there in the Test team for Australia”, was the word from the BCCI insider.

Sehwag who had great IPL season this year also had a fairly good Champions league T20 for the Kings XI Punjab. The things that impressed the most was the way he was hitting the ball, like he always did with utmost confidence and faith in his shots. Besides, his past record in Australia has also been excellent which further improves his chances.

There are reports which also suggest that off late  Viru has been working quite hard on his fitness and has also set up a personal gym with a trainer at his residence.

This makes the selection a lot more interesting, no one knows a call for the tests and good performance down under could also pave way for him into the squad for the Wold Cup as the hosts remain the same.
