Team India Skipper MS Dhoni told his team to be proud of the way they played: The Indian dressing room was expected to be a nervous and tensed place, in Sydney since the Indian team lost the semi-final match to co-hosts Australia in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. It was more disappointing because the recent performances by the team had revived faith of the fans and followers that this team of little experienced youngsters is capable of defending the World Cup they won in 2011.

Dhoni has not only been a captain to this team, he has led them in toughest of times, through huge success (world cup champions) and discouraging failures (in twice in England and Australia) but every time that there is a new challenge put ahead of him, the man wears a brave face, gets set himself and prepares his team for it.

So when India lost to Australia in the semi-finals, the team was sad, disappointed at having lost the match and the cup; disheartened on failing to deliver on the Billion hopes that relied on them. This is when MS Dhoni walked in the Dressing room, gathered all his players and shared his view on it.

If one bowler stood tall for India throughout the tournament consistently and even in the semi-final when others were dismantled it was Ravichandran Ashwin. The off spinner shared a few moments from the dressing room with the Indian Express a few days from the match.

Ashwin said Dhoni was as sad and disappointed like everyone else but he came to us and talked, “He said we were beaten by the better team on the day — that we should have done better, chased better, but that’s how it can go sometimes, “He told us to be proud of the way we played through the tournament and asked us to keep learning from it. He said; don’t forget all the good things you guys did on the field, the way you bowled, keep it in the memory and hold on to it,”

He further added that, not many players spoke after Dhoni’s inspiring exchange, “Not many spoke. We were all flat and just quiet. Dhoni was upset but realistic about how we went through the tournament. I wouldn’t say there was sadness, as in tears, but we were all flat.”

The Indian team after the loss decided to leave Australia in batches, players who wanted to stay on for a day or two held back while others flew back home. Ashwin was one of those who waited a couple of days before returning and while Down Under, he said fans appreciated their effort and accepted the result with pride and respect for the team and their performance.

Ashwin told the IE, “I think that as a nation we have come a long, long way. The public has been fabulous. Even in the last two days in Sydney, after the semis, everyone walked up to me and said, ‘Well done, well-played, we are proud of you guys.’ You have got to give people credit for the way they have handled it. They have been appreciative and have actually helped our team,”

The support that the fans gave the team even in Australia, they almost painted the entire stadium blue, the team was encouraged and energized by the outstanding support said Ashwin, “The kind of electric atmosphere in Melbourne for the game against South Africa was something else. It actually helped us perform better. I have nothing but great appreciation and gratitude for the way the fans have supported us. It just inspires us to turn out and do our best for the country.”
