India, ended the day on 19/0 with only 87 more runs to grab the series 2-1 after an astonishing collapse from the Australian batsmen after the lunch session. Australia started off the third day in an optimistic fashion with the wicket off the first ball, only to be overturned after a review from the batsman Ravindra Jadeja.

Since then, the pair of Wridhiman Saha and Jadeja endured some tough times at the middle of the wicket with the ball zipping past just outside the off-stump. The Australian duo of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were bowling their hearts out, only for their spell to go in vain. Once the Indians survived the torrid times, it was just a matter of how many runs the pair will add and how much lead will India get at the end of the session’s play.

Everything seemed to go against the desire of the Australian captain Steve Smith with Jadeja and Saha continuing from where they left last evening during the last session of play. It all seemed to go away from the Aussies before a determined spell from Pat Cummins brought the game back in Australia’s favour where the quickly dismissed the well-set Jadeja and Saha in the span of 2 overs. India was reduced from 316/6 to 332/10 in the short passage of 6 overs, leading by 32 runs.

Australia’s innings, however, did not go according to the plans as David Warner, Steve Smith and Matt Renshaw were dismissed even before the Aussies could wipe off the deficit. A short yet crucial partnership between Peter Handscomb and Glenn Maxwell propelled the Australian innings before the former was done by a blinder from the Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane.

Shaun Marsh too followed suit with a poor shot off the Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. At 92/5, Australia’s hopes were in the hands of Maxwell and Matthew Wade.

Another “Brain-fade” moment in the match was Maxwell’s leave against a spinning delivery from Ashwin, which would crash into the leg-stump. From then, it was a matter of how much more the Australians were going to score.

The last four wickets only added 31 runs before Australia were bowled out for a below-par score of 137 runs. The Indians were set a modest target of 105 runs from the remaining two days.

Openers KL Rahul and Murali Vijay remained unbeaten at the close of the day at 19/0, with India needing more 87 runs for a series win.

This is how the Twitterati’ reacted to the third day’s play of the deciding Test:
