Durham opener Keaton Jennings, son of former South African domestic cricketer Ray Jennings made his Test debut for England today. He was flown in to join the team after Haseeb Hameed fractured his finger and was ruled out of the remainder of the series. Jennings who was a part of the England Lions team scored a century against the United Arab Emirates team in Dubai that along with a great season for Durham earned him a Test call-up.

England skipper Alastair Cook won the toss and on the very first morning of the match, he walked out to open the inning at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Jennings was tentative to start with, Umesh Yadav almost had him for a duck, fending on a short ball but Karun Nair at gully couldn’t hold on to it. He got off the mark with a boundary and thereafter played a more assured knock.

He survived another chance a close leg-before-wicket appeal from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the bowler went for the referral but with the impact outside the line, the on-field umpire’s decision stayed. Keaton gradually started to get into his groove. Once the pacers failed to get him the wickets, skipper Virat Kohli brought in his trump card off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Jennings’ experience of playing in the subcontinent came in handy as he wasn’t affected by the introduction of spin, rather opted for a calculated yet aggressive approach. He started playing the sweep shot, the reverse sweep and also the improvised reverse sweep depending on the line and length of the ball. He got to his half century with the skipper still around but just ahead of lunch Cook was dismissed but Jennings was undeterred.

He showed a lot of maturity and understanding of the game, it was probably conveyed that now was the best time to score on this surface and in the post Lunch session he made the most of it with Joe Root and Moeen Ali for company. Jennings was soon in the 90s but he wasn’t nervous, displaying the mindset of the modern-day cricketer he played the reverse sweep once again while on 96 and got to his century.

He became the 19th England batsman to score a century on Test debut, there were still no signs of a lapse in concentration and it needed a beauty from Ravi Ashwin to draw him forward and induce and edge and a brilliant diving catch from Cheteshwar Pujara at deep gully to send him back to the pavilion. Jennings scored 112 runs after facing 219 balls and hit 14 boundaries in his knock.
