The premier one-day domestic tournament of India, Vijay Hazare Trophy 2017, kicked off with some brilliant performances on day one. The most notable among all the fixtures on the first day was the match between Jharkhand and Karnataka. Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni led the Jharkhand side in the cracking encounter. Dhoni-led Jharkhand side came very close to the target but ended up falling short by just 5 runs on the day. It was K Gowtham’s 4/58 that sealed the match for Karnataka.

Earlier in the game, Karnataka had posted 266 in their innings riding on Manish Pandey’s 77 and R Samarth’s 71. The Ranji Trophy finalists, Mumbai and Gujarat, locked horns at Chennai and the match was sure to garner a lot of attention. Gujarat could not repeat their winning performance of Ranji finals and succumb to 98-run defeat. Aditya Tare, the Mumbai skipper, top scored for Mumbai with 83 to his name.

There was a run fest on the cards too. Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh clashed at Cuttack in a very high scoring game. Maharashtra posted a mammoth 376/7 in their 50 overs riding on Ruturaj Gaikwad’s brilliant 132, assisted by Naushad Shaikh’s 72 off just 39 balls. Himachal Pradesh, in their reply, managed to reach 351 as Prashant Chopra scored a ton for them.

Out-of-favor team India batsman and Tamil Nadu veteran Dinesh Karthik also notched up a classic century against Delhi. Karthik’s run blitz of 97-ball 118 saw Tamil Nadu end up with 314/8. Delhi were bowled out for 272 in their reply despite fifies from Dhruv Shorey, Milind Kumar and Gautam Gambhir. Some big names participated in the match between Baroda and Railways. Deepak Hooda and Irfan Pathan starred for Baroda in the match at Palam, New Delhi. Hooda’s power packed 119 came off just 92 deliveries. He helped his side post 259/9 on the board, in reply to which the Railways could manage just 229 as Krunal Pandya (3/32) and Irfan Pathan (2/30) starred with the ball.
