Jasprit Bumrah

Team India was under pressure in the ODI series Down Under and their fast bowlers were getting injured one after the other. The team was excited to have Mohammad Shami back for the first time after the World Cup 2015 but he got injured again even before being fielded, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was brought in as a replacement and Bhuvi also injured himself to be unavailable. That was when the selectors looked into domestic performers and picked Gujarat pacer Jasprit Bumrah who had been among the wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

As soon as he landed in Australia, was given a game and debuted in the 5th ODI. He was called in for his ability to bowl the Yorkers and of course, his uncanny action. Bumrah delivered right away and returned with praiseworthy figures of 10-40-0-2. He also replaced Bhuvi in the T20I squad that was to play three matches on tour.

At the end of the series that India won 3-0 Bumrah had shown his ability to consistently bowl in the block hole in the death. He also grabbed 6 wickets in 3 T20Is, and with that, he automatically selected himself for the series against Sri Lanka, the Asia Cup and the World T20 2016.

In the first T20I against Sri Lanka though he remained wicket-less gave away nothing and was really effective in creating the pressure. At Rajkot where it was the spinners’ game, skipper brought him directly in the 15th over and Bumrah was right on the money bowling Yorkers. In his second over he got Senanayake out leg before on the 3rd ball before cleaning up Chameera on the last ball.

The final delivery was a special one, it was full and straight, not a Yorker but angled in from wide of the crease, Chameera doing a typical tailender looked to hit it through. But the ball found its way between the bat and pad, hit the upper half of his leg-stump and took it along while the other half was still rooted.
