Bangladesh are to take on Sri Lanka in a two-test series that gets underway from March 7, Tuesday. As far as the test rankings are concerned Bangladesh has a healthy chance of overtaking the West Indies if they manage a victory in any one of the tests in the two-test series.

Going by the International Cricket Council’s media release Bangladesh could go one point clear of the West Indies with 70 points if they secure a 1-0 win in the series. However a 2-0 win could take them to 72 points to the eighth position in the rankings.

On the other hand if the Sri Lankans manage to beat Bangladesh 2-0 in the series they could go up to 93 points. But it would not do any good to their position in the table as they would remain in the seventh position even with a 2-0 series win.

Dinesh Chandimal who is ranked 31st in the batsman ratings would be Sri Lanka’s leading batsman in the absence of Angelo Mathews and Rangana Herath, the Sri Lankan skipper would be leading the bowling attack at the fourth position.

For Bangladesh who would be desperate to get some results out of the series, Mominul Haque would be their leading batsman at the 19th position while Shakib Al Hasan will be their top-ranked bowler at the 15th position.

Although Bangladesh has been able to win just three of their 45 away games- two against West Indies in 2009 and one against Zimbabwe in 2013-they have shown a lot of improvement since their last victory overseas.

Sri Lanka would be very much confident ahead of the series against Bangladesh as they possess a solid home record as they beat Australia 3-0 in August 2016. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are also to play three one day internationals and two T20 internationals after the completion of the test series.
