10 Players to score the first ever Test centuries for their teams: Scoring Test century is a big achievement and being the first one to do it in any form makes one kind of immortal in history of cricket. Here are 10 batsmen who scored the very first century in Test cricket for their teams. 10. Charles Bannerman – Australia (Photo Source: Wisden Cricket Monthly) Australia’s first century in Test cricket came from Charles Bannerman (actually born in England). He also holds the records for facing the first ball of the inaugural Test, in Melbourne in 1876-77, scoring the first runs. He finished with 165 before retiring hurt with a split hand. 9. WG Grace – England (Photo Source: Wisden) Known as the father of cricket, WG Grace was the best person to score England’s first ever Test century. It was the first ever Test in England, at the Oval in 1880, Grace scored a brilliant 152 to set up a target of 420 for Australia. 8. Jimmy Sinclair – South Africa (Photo Source: PA Photos) South Africa was the Bangladesh of the early era of cricket. They were a weak team and it took someone 8 tests to score a century for them. Jimmy Sinclair scored the first 100 for South Africa against England in Cape Town in 1898-99. Sinclair actually made the first 3 centuries for South Africa. 7. Clifford Roach – West Indies (Photo Source: The Cricketer International) Clifford Roach was an opener from Trinidad who scored the first hundred for West Indies in Bridgetown against England in 1930. Well, in the third Test of the series, he also scored the first double century (209) for West Indies. 6. Stewie Dempster – New Zealand (Photo Source: PA Photos) New Zealand was playing another English team at the same time as West Indies (only time it has happened that 2 teams from England were playing Test series against 2 teams at the same time) were playing their series. Stewie Dempster made the first hundred for New Zealand in the second match of the series with 136 runs. His opening partner Jackie Mills reached his hundred in the same innings a little after Dempster, together they scored 276 runs. 5. Lala Amarnath – India (Photo Source: Wisden) Nanik Amarnath Bharadwaj better known as Lala Amarnath scored the first ever century for India against visiting England team in 1933 in Bombay Gymkhana ground. He scored a total of 119 runs in what was his debut match for India. India did lose the match by 9 wickets though. 4. Nazar Mohammad – Pakistan (Photo Source: Pakistan Cricket Board) After Pakistan lost their inaugural test in 1952, they were looking forward to stamp their arrival in the second test in Lucknow. This was done by Fazal Mahmood who took 12 wickets in the match and by Nazar Mohammad, who made an unbeaten 124 runs in the only Pakistan innings. This was the very first century in Test cricket by a Pakistani batsman. 3. Sidath Wettimuny – Sri Lanka (Photo Source: Wisden Cricket Monthly) Resilient Sri Lankan opener, Sidath Wettimuny scored what was the first century from the Sri Lankan team in test cricket. It was their 3rd test match ever against Pakistan and Sri Lanka scored 454 and Wettimuny scored 157 of those runs. The match ended in a draw after Pakistan managed to play out the 5th day chasing 339 runs for the win. 2. Dave Houghton – Zimbabwe (Photo Source: Getty Images) Zimbabwe played their very first test against India in 1992 at Harare ground. Veteran keeper and Captain Dave Houghton became only the second man after Charles Bannerman to score a debut century in their country’s first test. Houghton scored an impressive 121 runs which helped Zimbabwe scored 456 in their first innings. His innings helped Zimbabwe to draw the test and become the first team not to lose their first match since Australia in 1877, the very first test. 1. Aminul Islam – Bangladesh (Photo Source: AFP) Thanks for Aminul Islam’s 145 in 535 minutes; Bangladesh became the first team to score 400 runs in their very first innings. The match was played in Dhaka and against India. But the good work of first inning was undone, when Bangladesh collapsed for 91 runs in their second innings to lose the Test by 9 wickets.
