While betting is deemed as illegal in Bangladesh, the activity has still made its presence felt in various quarters. As of the latest reports it has been revealed that 2 Indian bookies were detained from the stadium by the security agencies during a match in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

During the game between Rangpur Riders and Sylhet Sixers, two bookmakers from India were apprehended at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. The spectre of gambling has been in full flow. It’s surprising though that the bookmakers were confident enough to slide into the stadium.

Abdur Rashid Lokman who was deployed as the senior security coordinator at the stadium informed The Daily Star regarding the development. He informed that two bookies were caught by the Elite Force personnel in the stands during the match and have been handed over to the police.

However, this isn’t the first time an incident of this sort has been reported. Just a couple of days ago, two bookies from India were caught in the stadium and detained by the police. The Indian High Commission took custody of the individuals as further reports regarding the same awaits.

It has also been reported that gambling is a common occurrence in the stands. Transactions within the range of million dollars are being carried out by the bookies. The same is being communicated to the relevant people through mobile phones. It remains to be seen if any security measures would be undertaken to avoid such incidents in the future.

During the Dhaka leg of the tournament, a total of 77 people were reported for being involved in betting related activities. It included ten Indians. All the accused were expelled from the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. The incident had happened on the 17th of November during a match.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) hasn’t made an official statement on the current issue yet.
