There’s absolutely no doubt that Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are two of the best teams in the IPL. While MI have won four titles, CSK have won three despite playing a couple of seasons less. They usually dominate season after season. In fact, CSK have reached the top four every time, MI have not qualified for the playoffs only twice since 2010.

One of the reasons for their success has been the players and consistency. The teams also have some excellent scouts. Both teams trust their local Indian talent and try to get the best out of them. But they aren’t far behind in going after some quality international stars as well.

So, as we build-up to the IPL auctions which is only about five weeks away, we look at three players for whom both CSK and MI might get into a bidding war.

1. Tom Banton

If there is one international player that every T20 league in the world is eyeing, then it will most likely be Tom Banton at the moment. The 20-year-old Somerset cricketer has hit the headlines because of his eye-catching batting prowess and a wonderful T20 Blast.

Banton had a wonderful summer of 2019. He scored runs in all three formats. But it is his exploits in the shortest format that made the world sit up and take notice. In the T20 Blast, the exciting young wicketkeeper-batsman struck 549 runs at a strike rate of 161.47. Some of the shots he played were simply mid-boggling.

Moreover, he has a big-match temperament as well. Banton scored two fifties and a hundred in the three knockouts games of the Royal London One-Day Cup as well. Thus, according to reports, both Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have shown interest in the young English talent. It may well break into a bidding war between the two IPL giants if that report is true.

2. Shahrukh Khan

Shahrukh Khan is one of the cricketers who will be on most of the IPL scouts’ list. The Tamil Nadu cricketer is quietly earning the name of a finisher in white-ball cricket. The right-handed batsman has been doing well in both the T20 and the 50-over format.

For the last couple of seasons, he’s done well in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). He has scored runs at a decent rate. Khan has replicated that for Tamil Nadu as well. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy this season, he scored 244 runs at an average of 48.80. These runs came at a strike-rate of 125.77. Thus, he will be one of the players IPL teams will keep their eye out for.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) might be the front-runners. Khan hails from Tamil Nadu and CSK are looking for a finisher and hence, they might go for him. Meanwhile, MI have a good history of backing local Indian talent. Thus, they might go for him as well.

3. Chris Jordan

A lot of people talk about the death bowling of the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell Starc and Jofra Archer. But no one really talks about Chris Jordan. The England fast bowler is a very underrated customer in T20 cricket. He may be slightly expensive but he is spot on with his yorkers and his variations.

Jordan has become England’s premier T20 bowler. He hasn’t missed a single T20 for them since the end of the World T20 in 2016. The Barbados-born fast bowler has taken 36 wickets at an average of 21.77 and a strike-rate of 15.2 since the end of the 2016 World T20.

Hence, he may be one of the most sought-after bowlers in the upcoming IPL auctions. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are looking for a spearhead and a reliable death bowler. Mumbai Indians (MI) have a few overseas players who were injured last year and might be looking for replacements. Thus, both teams might go after Jordan.
