Pakistan’s decorated left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir has become the focal point of discussion in the cricket fraternity since his retirement from the international circuit. In December 2020, the speedster created a lot of stir and controversy when he decided to hang his boots for Pakistan at the age of 29.

A few days back, Amir revealed that he is trying for British citizenship and will continue playing as he still has six or seven years of cricket left in him. The news regarding Amir settling in the United Kingdom (UK) has been creating a lot of buzz on social media. If Amir obtains citizenship, he will be eligible to feature in the Indian Premier League as an English player.

Notably, the BCCI does not permit Pakistan players to participate in the T20 League. The only player who has been a part of the league after the inaugural edition is Azhar Mahmood. The former Pakistan all-rounder registered himself as an English player and appeared for the Punjab Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Thus, if Mohammad Amir takes the same route and goes under the hammer during the IPL auction then a lot of franchisees will be going behind the speedster.

In this article, let’s take a look at 3 teams that can sign Mohammad Amir in IPL:

1. Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings have a solid pacer in the form of Mohammed Shami. The Indian seamer has proved to be a great asset for the Punjab-based franchise and has delivered a lot of match-defining performances. However, the franchise is yet to find a good partner for Shami who can do wonders both in the powerplay and death overs.

The 2020 edition saw Punjab picking Sheldon Cottrell but the West Indies bowled proved to be expensive in the death overs and leaked a lot of runs. During 2021 auction, PBKS played a gamble by including Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith in their bowling attack.

However, both the bowlers failed to make an impact in the now-postponed IPL 2021 and were thus dropped from the team. Thus, it won’t be a surprise if the KL Rahul-led franchise decides to bid for the former Pakistan seamer as Amir has a proven track record in the international circuit.

2. Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have always been known for their formidable batting line-up that includes two of the greatest batsmen of all time, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. There were many times when the franchise managed to post massive totals of over 200 runs on the scoreboard. However, one of the reasons behind the team not able to win their maiden IPL title has been the absence of a good pace bowler.

Death bowling has always proved to be Achilles Heel for the Bangalore outfit as the franchise leaked a lot of runs in the death overs. In the 2021 edition, they played a big gamble by picking Kiwi pacer Kyle Jamieson for a whopping INR 15 crore but the speedster failed to live up to his reputation.

The now-postponed tournament also saw Mohammed Siraj leading the pace attack for RCB. However, the team will definitely hope to enrich their pace attack and support Siraj. If Mohammad Amir goes under the hammer, the chances of RCB going behind the Pakistan pacer are sky-high.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) looked like a stelled squad before the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a balanced mix of batters, bowlers, and all-rounders. However, the franchise succumbed to a torrid outing in the now-suspended T20 championship. Both their batting and bowling units disappointed big time.

The Knight Riders were languishing at the second last position on the points table. They could secure victory in just two games from seven played. The Australian veteran Pat Cummins essayed his job perfectly as he was the highest wicket-taker for the team. However, KKR failed to find another pacer who could support the Australian star.

There will be no one better than Mohammad Amir to accompany Pat Cummins in the powerplay and death overs. The two seamers will make a deadly pace combination as both boast of having ample international experience under their belt.
