In fact, it took time for them to accept the IPL and allow players to take part in the Indian T20 league. Barring Kevin Pietersen, there weren’t many players from England in the initial years of the IPL. But the tide turned in recent years and hence, the likes of Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow and Sam Curran are some of the stars that have become a critical part of teams now.

However, Joe Root has missed the bus. The England Test skipper has been one of the most consistent players for his country across formats but hasn’t played a single IPL so far. In 2018, Root put his name in the IPL auctions in a bid to play more T20 cricket. But he went unsold. A gruelling 2019 home season which included the World Cup and the Ashes meant that the ECB disallowed Root from taking part in the 2019 edition of the IPL.

Thus, Root hasn’t made his IPL debut yet. 2020 could well be the season where he finally puts his name in the IPL. Hence, here are three teams that should bid for him in the upcoming auctions for the 2020 season.

Three teams that can bid for Joe Root in the IPL 2020 auction:

Kings XI Punjab

Over the last couple of years, there’s been a template that’s followed Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). They start well and look good but get lost in the middle. They tend to lose steam and end up messing it up in the end and fail to reach the top four. One of the reasons has been their inability with the bat.

KL Rahul and Chris Gayle have been fantastic at the top of the order. They’ve been the chief run-getters for KXIP over the last couple of years. Mayank Agarwal did well last season. However, apart from that, no one has stepped up with the bat. The likes of David Miller, Mandeep Singh and Karun Nair have flattered to deceive.

Thus, Joe Root could be a perfect player for them to add in the middle. He could bat at 3 or 4 and lend solidity in the middle. KXIP need someone apart from Rahul and Gayle to fire and Root could be that man.
