Records and cricket go hand in hand. It is said that records are meant to be broken. Lending argument to this phrase are the cricketing stalwarts who have raised the standards of the sport to an impeccable height.  Every generation of cricket has experienced some of the best in the business. From Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Vivian Richard to Sachin Tendulkar and present in making Virat Kohli, all of these legends have redefined the nature of the game.

With the fearless brand of cricket being the order of the day, records are accomplished and broken apparently in every match. Almost, every cricket fanatic remembers the six-sixes-in-an-over record etched by the swashbuckler Yuvraj Singh in the inaugural T20 World Cup against the three lions back in 2007.

On that note, this article sheds light on 5 International cricketers who have hammered 6 consecutive fours in a single over leaving fans and experts in complete awe. Notably, they have etched their names in the history of cricketing folklore. The likes of Kumar Sangakkara, Matthew Hayden, and Brendon McCullum were some of the finest willow-wielders during their tenure. Let’s see whether they feature in this high-profile list.

The Mumbai-based cricketer broke into the national side against Pakistan in 1980. His contribution to Indian cricket was immense during his playing days. Sandeep Patil had a wide array of shots under his belt. The right-hander enjoyed a short career comprising of 29 Test and 45 ODIs. He has produced 3000-odd runs laced up with 4 hundreds in Test cricket.

The street-smart batter notched up a record of hitting six-fours in an over. In a Test match against England, he displayed some extra-ordinary shots against a top-quality bowling line-up. India was in a spot of bother at 173/6 against England’s total of 425 runs in the first innings. Sandeep Patil during the course of his resurrecting 129 achieved the feat of six fours in an over.

His consecutive boundaries included dashing square cuts, a swat down the ground, and a well-timed hook shot. Although the fourth ball of the over was a dot ball, the previous delivery which was a no-ball went for a four. Hence, the 64-year-old did complete his set of six fours in an over but they were not consecutive.

2. Chris Gayle

The Caribbean superstar is an entertainer in the true sense of the term. Chris Gayle has achieved several laurels and accolades to his name. The six-hitting master has been a regular star in the shortest format of the game. However, he has featured in 103 test matches for the West Indies team which may surprise a few. All in all, he has amassed 7000-odd runs to his credit at a stunning average of 42.19.

The man who cherishes to find the fence, deposited six fours in a single over against the three lions back in 2004. Batting first, England posted 470 runs on the scoreboard. In reply, the West Indies team fell like a pack of cards against the ruthless bowling spell of Steve Harmison, bagging six-wicket.

Going in to bat again, as follow-on was enforced upon the Caribbean nation, Gayle did something special which made him earn lavish praises from the fans and experts. In an over bowled by Matthew Hoggard’s, the heavyweight smashed six fours apparently giving spectator’s a limited-over format taste. If there is a modern Indian batsman who masters the art of holding the nerve and save the team’s ship, his name is Ajinkya Rahane. The dependable-top order batsman is a great swing-ball player as evident from his top-class century against England back in 2014 at the iconic Lord’s. While every Indian cricketer was struggling to find the rhythm, Rahane remained upbeat and helped India to register a thumping victory in the match.

Let’s talk about the thrilling record which the 32-year-old etched in the IPL 2012. In a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the right-hander ruled the roost from the word go. Making it worst for the tweaker Sreenath Arvind,  he went all guns out, dashing six fours in the 13th over of the match in the red outfit’s backyard.

The elegant stroke player dispatched the leather all over the cricketing field. Moreover, he went on to score 103 unbeaten and earned the Man of the Match award at the post-match presentation.

However, the 44-year-old had something special in store for the Kangaroos. As it turned out, Dilshan lost his opening partner Lahiru Thirimanne early. After five overs, Sri Lanka were 22/1 as Mitchell Johnson stormed in. He welcomed him with two booming drives on consecutive deliveries.

The veteran stalwart pulled the next two balls and made his intentions clear. Eventually, Dilshan looked unstoppable as he drove the next two balls for two more boundaries. Unfortunately, despite his entertaining 62, Sri Lanka fell short by 64 runs.

In an injury-marred career, he has notched 5804 runs in 181 ODI matches. which speaks volumes about his prowess.

Hence, a typical West Indies who fancies playing power-strokes found its prey in the form of Indian speedster Munaf Patel in a red-ball game. Sending chills to the Baroda-based bowler’s spine, he thrashed Patel’s six balls for four with sheer class written all over it. Sarwan slashed the first ball for a boundary through the offside, a hook and a cover drive followed.
