Unlike football, the role of a coach is not that significant in the gentleman’s game. It is mostly behind the scenes and about helping the players overcome some technical glitches and man management in the side. Since the job description of a coach in cricket is not completely specific, it’s not that easy to take up this responsibility.

Indian cricket over the last few decades had some legendary coaches like John Wright and Gary Kirsten whilst the likes of Gregg Chappell and Ravi Shastri were at the receiving end of some criticism. Anil Kumble also held the command for a while but didn’t get an extended term. Nevertheless, Shastri, the current Indian head coach, has mustered phenomenal results.

Not a lot of former cricketers wish to take up coaching responsibilities as they instead prefer commentary spells. But in the current crop of cricketers, there are some outstanding talents who might as well go ahead and become a great coach for their national team or T20 franchise in the times to come.

It would be fair to point out that Ajinkya Rahane was under the stewardship of Pravin Amre, who has managed to help many Indian cricketers get over technical batting issues. Rahane is a calm, collective and pragmatic individual whose presence in the Indian side or any other side as a coach can be really helpful.

He also captained the Men in Blue on a few occasions and showcased his tactical knowledge as well. He’s an aggressive captain and will encourage his players to go all guns blazing right from the outset, especially the bowlers. His demeanour and the difference in approach makes it interesting. If he really decides to become a coach in the future, there are a lot to look forward to.
