The Indian Premier League (IPL) is about to get its twelfth season underway in a few months. Right after the first season of this tournament ended, more than a decade ago, everyone knew that this league wasn’t going to stop any time soon. Turns out, it really didn’t. Instead, the IPL has only gotten bigger and bigger with every season, so much so, that minimal international matches take place during this tournament today. It has helped a number of rather small players make fortunes, besides playing with and against the bigger names in world cricket.

Since the cash-rich league is more than a decade old, it shouldn’t be surprising to know that many players who once played in this league can no longer take the field today. Some of them have taken up coaching roles with teams all around the world, while some have been fortunate enough to be a part of the support staff of the same IPL franchise, they once played for. In this write-up, we bring to you 5 players who once played in the IPL and later joined the staff of the same team.

The tall and elegant former Kiwi left-hander, Stephen Fleming, was already a well-known player when the first season of the IPL got underway. He was a part of the Chennai Super Kings and played for them in the second edition of the league as well before announcing his retirement.

Fleming, after playing 10 matches for the Super Kings and retiring, couldn’t really live up to the expectations of fans or his team in the IPL, but the Chennai-based franchise was still wise enough to keep him in the scheme of things as a coach. Given the fact that after he took over the coaching role, CSK won three IPLs, one can safely say he didn’t disappoint them this time.
