The Indian Premier League (IPL) will undergo a drastic change next year when the mega auction will take place. With multiple new faces, the teams might be looking to become stronger and improve in certain areas. Adding on, we might also witness the change in the fortunes of few teams.

Teams that are struggling currently, can make subtle changes too. IPL is all about providing the perfect platform for the players to showcase their skills. The most perfect example is of Rohit Sharma, who, since 2013, has been showing his captaincy skills.

Under his leadership, MI has won five IPL titles so far. Well, this caught the attention of the team management and now, he is the vice-captain of the national team.

The standards of the IPL have helped Team India and other national teams to grow. Well, multiple superstars have the potential to lead their teams.

Let us have a look at 5 overseas stars who can be signed as the captains of their respective teams in the IPL mega auction:

1. Pat Cummins

Injuries had hampered Pat Cummins’s career initially. During his debut, he played a match-winning role at the Wanderers against South Africa. But, later on, he was not able to get back into the team due to injuries. However, his determination has made him the best bowler in the world as per the Test rankings.

Cummins is the current vice-captain of the Australian cricket team. In 30 T20Is, he has picked 37 wickets. He also has a superb economy rate of 6.94 in the T20 format. Adding on, he is a handy batsman down the order.

In the IPL, he has an economy rate of 8.24, which is decent for someone who bowls in the powerplay and at the death. But, if any team needs a captain, Pat is a good choice. He has the experience, can set up good fields, and can inspire the team with his bowling performance. Pat can nurture emerging fast bowlers as well.

2. Steve Smith

Steve Smith is one of the finest batsmen in this era. Although he started his career as a leg spinner, his talent with the bat was exceptional. After Michael Clarke announced his retirement, Smith managed to build up a strong Aussie squad.

But, he was suspended for a year because of the ball-tampering scandal. Smith has played 45 T20I games so far. In the shortest format of the game, he has a decent strike rate of 129.53.

Apart from that, he usually plays the role of an anchor. In any given circumstances, Smith is a handy T20 batsman for any team. During the 2017 IPL, he was the captain of Rising Pune Supergiant, a team that went on to reach the finals of the season.

In the 2022 mega auction, Smith could be a good choice for teams who are looking forward to the future. A proven performer and a decent captain with a good squad could be the formula to success for any franchise that wants to lift the trophy.

3. Faf du Plessis

Faf du Plessis has been South Africa’s go-to man in desperate situations along with AB de Villiers. He can fit into any role and can save runs while guarding the boundary ropes. Faf has a plethora of experience in every format of the game.

He has played 50 T20Is so far and has scored consistently with a healthy average of 35.53. With a run tally of 1528 in T20Is, Faf is one of South Africa’s most iconic batsmen since the last decade. Adding on, he has been associated with Chennai Super Kings for quite some time now.

Under the leadership of Dhoni, he has played many match-winning innings. Now, as Dhoni is at the sunset of his career, Faf could take up the captaincy role if needed.

With many changes being expected at the Chennai camp, the presence of an experienced campaigner could help CSK. He has some experience being South Africa’s captain and hence the management could trust him as the next CSK captain.

4. Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler is one of England’s most vital players. He is a great wicketkeeper and a hard-hitting batsman. The best part about Jos is his ability to adapt to the situation. On numerous occasions, he has rescued England.

Jos has played 80 T20Is for England and has a humongous strike rate of 140.25 in T20Is. Adding on, he has been scoring consistently for England over the years. Well, he is playing for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League under the leadership of Sanju Samson.

But, if somehow, Rajasthan wishes to have a change in captaincy, or Jos is released, he could play as a captain for any team. He has leadership skills and is calm and composed all the time.

With an experience of 65 IPL games, Jos could lead any team with a decent combination of overseas players and talented Indian youngsters. If any team wishes to draft a wicketkeeper-batsman, then Jos should be the prime contender.

5. David Warner

David Warner is one of the most iconic batsmen in the history of IPL. Over the years, he has been consistent for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. But, this time, he has been sacked as the captain and it’s because of his poor form and unwanted results.

Even though Warner is no longer the captain of SRH, he could get another shot at captaincy if he is picked up by any other franchise. In 148 IPL games, he has scored 5447 runs. Adding on, he has scored four centuries in his IPL career.

There is no doubt that Warner is one of the most prolific batsmen since 2010. Warner was the captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad when they won the IPL way back in 2016.

During that time, he managed to set up a brilliant mixture of youth and experience in the SRH squad. If he returns as the captain of any team next year, there is a possibility that he might replicate his success.
