5 players who deserve a place for Zimbabwe tour: After the humiliating series defeat to Bangladesh India can ill afford another hick up. The uncertainity around the tour hasn’t helped anybody’s cause with players taking the Bangladesh series as the end of the season. Among reports that a lot of the players requested being rested for the series, the selectors decided to go in with a full strength squad. That was not to have any impact though, as we realize in hindsight. MS Dhoni’s statements about non stop cricket have been at the centre of cricketing discussion after the men in blue’s meek surrender. The senior players might get their wish on the upcoming Zimbabwe tour if the selectors decide to try some new faces. India would however do well not to take Zimbabwe lightly on their home turf. Let us look at some names who literally deserve a place in the squad : 1. Gautam Gambhir Gautam Gambhir. (© Getty Images) Year after year Gambhir has proven his class in the IPL. He has also not got a chance in the one day format for a long time now. In case the selectors rest both Dhoni and Kohli, which is very probable, Gambhir might step in as the skipper of the side. Being an opener he also allows the required flexibility for others to be tried in the middle order. It is time the selectors give him his due and provide a fair opportunity to either fail or succeed. 2. Harbhajan Singh Harbhajan Singh. (© Getty Images) He almost carried the spin bowling duties of the Mumbai Indians on his shoulders and led them to a famous title victory. He is slowly getting his rhythm back and that can only be welcome news. Amidst strong chances of Ashwin being given a much required break he can be a perfect replacement. Not only does he bring great amount of skill but also tremendous experience. With young players in the side that can be as good as gold for team India. Ask cricket fans and they can not wait to see the flair that Bhajji brings on the cricket field. 3. Robin Uthappa (Photo Source: AFP) The Karnataka star has been warming the bench for much too long. With impressive performances both in the domestic circuit and the IPL, Uthappa is eagerly waiting for a fair run to prove himself. The other advantage he brings with him is playing as a keeper batsman. Also not to forget this guy can bat anywhere in the batting order as he has shown in the past. His sumptuous stroke play and timing are a treat to watch. 4. Dhawal Kulkarni Dhawal Kulkarni. (Photo Source: AFP) He has been one player who does not get disheartened by having to sit on the bench. Rather he waits for his opportunity and strikes when the iron is hot. Testimony to this was the recent Bangladesh series where he was the only Indian pacer who had something to show in his kitty. A perennial performer in the Ranji trophy, Kulkarni never quite got a full run. This for sure has to be his time of reckoning and he would be eager to make a name for himself. 5. Amit Mishra (Photo Source: BCCI) Having to play most of the time in the shadow of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, this Delhi lad has never been one to complain. By every account the best leg spinner in India, Mishra has a fantastic record in Zimbabwe and was the man of the series with 18 wickets the last time India toured there. With team India playing most of its cricket in the subcontinent over the next two years, Mishra would be an ideal choice for the second spinner when it comes to test matches. And thus it is even more imperative that selectors keep him in the mix and make him feel wanted.
