It certainly has been a campaign to forget for the Mumbai Indians (MI) team, who have lost eight consecutive matches and have become the first team to achieve this milestone. After the announcement of their retention picks, things were going all right, but they had a bad outing in the IPL 2022 mega auction, which was an initial point of trigger for the ongoing slide. In this season, the failure of the openers, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan has kept them at bay for getting a good start in the powerplay overs. Although the middle order has done well, with the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma producing impressive performances. In the semi-finals, they faced Pakistan and chased down the target of 177 runs in a thrilling fashion. The wicket-keeper Matthew Wade finished the chase by hitting three sixes of Shaheen Afridi’s over. In the finals, Australia was up against the challenge of the New Zealand team. After being average with the ball, they again were successful to chase 173, with Mitchell Marsh and David Warner scoring half-centuries. The opener Warner was named as “Player of the tournament” with 289 runs in seven matches. This was Australia’s maiden T20 World Cup win in international cricket. Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021, Kohli announced that he will leave the captaincy in the T20I format to manage the workload better. In December 2021, Rohit Sharma was chosen as the ODI captain for India, with the BCCI opting to have one captain for the white-ball cricket. After the loss of the Indian team in the South Africa Test series, Kohli relinquished the captaincy role from the red-ball format as well. He finished with 58.82%, 64.58%, and 68.4% success rates in Tests, T20Is, and ODIs respectively. Through all these years, Dhoni has served as a pivotal force to keep the team calm in pressure situations. In this pursuit, he helped CSK reach 11 playoffs, and win the title four times in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021. However, ahead of the IPL 2022 season, Dhoni passed the CSK baton to the all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who did not have much experience in the leadership role. In the 2021 season, he garnered 313 runs at an average of 31.30, with the highest score of 76*. In his IPL career spanning 184 matches, he amassed 5162 runs at an average of 39.71, with a strike rate of 151.69. The Indian team lost the T20 World Cup 2021 fixture against Pakistan by failing to defend their total of 151 runs. India was rocked by Shaheen Afridi’s brilliant spell of bowling with the new ball, as he took important wickets of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli. The team could not recover and could only post a respectable score, with Kohli scoring a half-century. In response, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan scored half-centuries to help Pakistan win by 10 wickets. Ahead of this fixture, India held a dominating 12-0 edge over Pakistan in the World Cups, comprising 50-over and 20-over format matches.
