The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has been quite successful in the first two editions. The inaugural edition of the tournament was an instant hit back in the year 2016. A league that was played on the lines of Indian Premier League and the Big Bash League, PSL had its own uniqueness to boast about. The tournament lasted only 24 matches across three weeks unlike other T20 leagues that span across a month or even more than that at times.

Also, the tournament saw the participation of only 5 teams in the first two seasons. Now, as per the recent reports, the 2018 edition of the PSL will have an additional team on the roster. There will be 6 teams competing for the coveted trophy. Interestingly, the Pakistan Super League working committee wanted to have the additional franchise in the 2017 edition itself.

However, due to the prior Memorandum of Understandings and commitments made with five existing franchises, the tournament working committee could not add an additional team. The addition of the team would have come in conflict with the interests of the existing teams as they had a two-year agreement of non-addition of the new teams. The profits were meant to be shared among the five teams in the first two editions of the tournament.

Now with the clause expiring, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that a new team will be added for the tournament next year. As per the reports in Cricbuzz, the interested parties keen on bagging the new franchise are expected to send their proposals by May 30. The addition of new team would mean that the tournament will have 34 matches in the next season.

Moreover, the PSL chief Najam Sethi has expressed his desire to schedule 8 matches of the PSL 2018 in Pakistan. Earlier this year, the finals of PSL 2017 were held in Lahore amidst high security. The current participating teams are Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi.
