The much-awaited U19 World Cup kickstarted on January 13th, 2018. The youngsters know that this is a great chance for them to showcase their talent and stake a claim for the selection into the senior squad. Such opportunities do not keep coming every other day. We have seen in the past that several players have taken the U19 route and have got into the senior side. This proves that performances are rewarded. Though Austin Waugh endured a poor outing for Australia U19 in the opening game against India U19.

While the senior Australian side hammered the Englishmen in the Ashes, the onus was now on the juniors to perform in the World Cup. The captain Jason Sangha was the player to watch out for in the tournament. The preparations went as planned as they won their first warm-up game against Sri Lanka by 53 runs while the second practice match was called off due to rain.

Outplayed in all departments by India

However, the Aussies faltered in the 328 run chase against India and lost the game by 100 runs. They were no match for the men in blue who showed great character and application in the way they played. Led from the front, Skipper Prithvi Shaw scored 94 runs to give a positive start to his team. Manjot Kalra and Shubman Gill also played handy innings and hammered the Aussie bowlers. Austin Waugh, the son of Steve Waugh had a day to forget. He conceded 64 runs in just 6 overs at an economy rate of 10.66.

The Jr. Waugh broke a few records that he would rather have avoided. His economy rate of 10.66 was the worst for an Australian in a U19 CWC game. It was also the 2nd worst economy rate in a Youth ODI game for an Australian. He did not contribute much with the bat too as he got out for just six runs.

While the Indians will be pleased with their performance at the Bay Oval, the Aussies have time to regroup. It is still early days in the tournament but they cannot make the same mistake again. Their fielding was poor while they did not display much in the other two departments as well.
