Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been known for being vocal on various political issues these days. In fact, rumors have also been adrift that he’s likely to stand as a candidate for the Bhartiya Janta Party. He has never shied away or minced any words when speaking about any issue on social media.

Quite recently, former Indian captain, Mohammed Azharuddin was bestowed the honour of ringing the bell at the Eden Gardens before the commencement of the 1st T20I between India and Windies. Gambhir lambasted Cricket Association of Bengal which is headed by Sourav Ganguly for that. Azhar had serious match-fixing charges against him and was given a life ban by the BCCI before it was overturned in 2012.

The cricketer tweeted, “India may have won today at Eden but I am sorry BCCI, CoA & CAB lost. Looks like the No Tolerance Policy against Corrupt takes a leave on Sundays! I know he was allowed to contest HCA polls but then this is shocking. The bell is ringing, hope the powers that be are listening.”

Gambhir had no issues sharing a platform and a laugh back with Azhar in 2014

He earned both praises and criticism towards his controversial post. However, there was a journalist who pointed out his hypocrisy on the subject. Sharing a post from four years back, Gambhir could be seen sharing the same platform with Azhar. He even had a laugh alongside the other guest panelists present. Hence it’s difficult to believe whether his concerns are genuine or out of political mileage.

Journalist G Rajaraman in a thread pointed out the irregularities in Gambhir’s statements. “Clearly he had no issues sharing platforms and a laugh back in 2014. So what happened now? I wonder if Mr Gambhir would spearhead a campaign to make match-fixing a criminal offence. The day he does that, he would be doing real service to sport. And to the nation.”
