Former Indian player and cricket expert Aakash Chopra has explained why wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha and veteran pacer Ishant Sharma were awarded a central contract by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) despite not being in the Indian squad.

BCCI had recently announced the central contracts for Indian players. It is to be noted that some senior players like Saha, Ishant, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara were dropped for the Test series against Sri Lanka due to their poor form, but received yearly contracts from the board. While Ishant has a Grade B contract along with Pujara and Rahane, Saha has been handed a Grade C contract.

Chopra in a video shared on his YouTube channel pointed out that several fans might be surprised by seeing Saha and Ishant’s names in the list. He explained.

“Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha’s names are also there in BCCI’s central contracts. In fact, Ishant Sharma is at 3 crores. Are you wondering why? Why was Saha given a central contract when you have told him that you are not going to select him at all?” Chopra said.

“These are the contracts from October 2021 to the upcoming September. That is why Saha has the right. He was India’s player in this contract period. He scored runs for India in December, that is why his name is there in this list, same goes for Ishant Sharma, he was playing regularly,” added Chopra.
Wicketkeeper-batter Saha has represented India in 40 Test matches in which he has scored 1353 runs at an average of 29.41. The right-handed batter has six fifties and three centuries under his belt. Meanwhile, pacer Ishant has more experience as compared to Saha. The 33-year old has played over 100 matches in the longest format of the game scalping 311 wickets in the process. Taking about his limited-over career, Ishant has represented India in 94 limited-over matches taking a total of 123 wickets.
