India, on Monday, announced the limited-overs squads for their upcoming assignments against Australia and New Zealand. The Men in Blue will take on Australia in three ODIs after the conclusion of the ongoing Test series. Following that, India will fly further south to play five ODIs and three T20Is against New Zealand.

The selectors sprung quite a few surprises while naming the squad. One of the biggest surprises was their decision to drop Shreyas Iyer from the squad. The in-form right-handed batsman was in the squad for the series against Windies at home and the series in Australia. He, however, did not play a single game. But the selectors did not bother about it much and showed him the door while recalling the likes of MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav.

It was a harsh decision on Iyer given his consistent displays with the bat for Mumbai and India A. What made the snub a tough pill to swallow that he got the boot even without getting a chance to prove his credentials. Iyer has been in fine form with the bat in recent time.

In October this year, he led Mumbai to the Vijay Hazare Trophy title win, scoring 373 runs at an average of over 93. He recently blasted a 139-ball 178 in the Ranji Trophy tie against Baroda. On Sunday too, he slammed 83 off just 60 balls, helping Mumbai take the command against Saurashtra. Iyer slammed seven sixes, three of them off successive balls from left-arm spinner Dharmendra Jadeja to send a timely reminder to the selectors.

Chopra surprised with Iyer’s omission:

With Iyer doing so well with the bat, the selectors’ decision to drop him raised quite a few eyebrows and former India opener Aakash Chopra was also taken aback. The cricketer-turned-commentator took to Twitter to post a cryptic message, writing, “Shreyas Iyer?”

Well, Chopra did not reveal his take on the matter but it is more than clear that he was not impressed with the decision to drop Iyer.
