Abu Dhabi T20 Trophy to hit the floor later this year

As of now, five teams have been decided and big names have been roped in.

There have been a plethora of T20 tournaments played around the world ever since the inception of format. The shortest version of the game has taken the cricketing world by storm and has captured the imaginations of fanatics from around the globe. The England Cricket Board (ECB) introduced the format in 2003 after which the first T20I was played in 2005 between Australia and New Zealand at the Eden Park in Auckland.

Recently, another tournament in the form of the Abu Dhabi T20 trophy is set to take place in October. As of now, five teams have been decided and the seventh is yet to be announced. Lahore Qalandars (Pakistan), Hobart Hurricanes (Australia), Yorkshire Vikings (England), Boost Defenders (Afghanistan) and Multiply Titans (South Africa) are the participating teams as per reports in The National.

Chris Gayle, the Windies batsman, has been roped in by the Boost Defenders. Yasir Shah, the leg-spinner, will represent the Lahore Qalandars. Left-handed batsman Gary Ballance will lead the Vikings and the likes of Albie Morkel and Farhaan Behardien will play for the Titans.

“An exciting new era”- Awani

The event will take place from October 4-6 at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The extravaganza has received support from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the ECB. Aref Al Awani, the General Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council reckons that the event will be a massive hit and is slated to bring about a radical change in the history of UAE cricket.

“Make no mistake, this a dynamic field of the best of the best. With this level of player power, the tournament allows Abu Dhabi to deliver on our mandate of ushering in an exciting new era of cricket in the emirate,” Awani mentioned.

“Fans can look forward to three days of thrilling entertainment in what we anticipate will be fiercely fought action to lift the inaugural Abu Dhabi T20 Trophy,” he added.
