Australia Test batsman Adam Voges has been released from hospital after he was admitted with a suspected concussion following a freak accident during a County Championship game in England.

The incident took place during the Middlesex versus Hampshire county game at the Rose Bowl stadium in Southampton. Voges, who skipper Middlesex, was fielding at slips on day one when he suffered a blow to the head after a return throw from sub-fielder Ollie Rayner.

Ollie fetched the ball which Michael Carberry had deposited to the boundary. The return throw from the substitute was bit errant and hit Voges on the back of the head. The 36-year-old immediately fell to the ground but was conscious when the Middlesex physiotherapist reached him in the middle. It is unclear whether he lost consciousness prior to receiving treatment.

With the assistance of both teams’ physios, Voges was able to walk off the Rose Bowl ground. He was taken to hospital as a precaution and won’t take any further part in the match.

“The feeling from physio Peter Waxman is that he’s got concussion but that’ll be shown up (conclusively) later (by doctors),” Middlesex director of cricket Angus Fraser said after play.

“(It was) a freak injury, as such, but I suppose you wonder with a cricket ball thrown around a field as much it is, you wonder why it doesn’t happen a bit more often.

“They’re hard things, cricket balls, and it’s sad news for Adam and obviously disappointing for us.

“He wasn’t feeling very well in the dressing room (after the knock) but he’s been taken to the hospital to get it checked over.

“He was feeling a lot better and seems to be coming around.”

This is the second case of head injury in the last fortnight. Sri Lankan Kaushal Silva also suffered a head injury while fielding at the short leg position. The injury appeared to be serious and he had to be flown to Colombo for treatment. The cricketer recovered fully fit.
