Team India has been playing without a coach for more than a year now after the departure of Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher. Ravi Shastri had served as the director and his contract also ended with the World T20 2016.

Since then, the board had reached out to different desired candidates and has reached a point where they are facing frequent rejection from all of them. Most of them are not willing to take up the task due to several reasons. Coaching has gone to a different level nowadays and no one is ready to take over the responsibility of the high-pressure job. Another added reason to the woes of the board is that former cricketers are not willing to take up the opportunity.

A top BCCI official spoke to Times of India and said, “We had spoken to a few people but most of them were reluctant citing they needed to be with their families. The job of Indian team’s coach would mean being away from their families for long periods. The coaching profiles have changed over the past few years. Nobody wants to endure pressure and strain that comes with being with Team India all through the year. They prefer to have shorter stints with IPL and Big Bash League (BBL) teams, which gives them good money and also a lot of free time to spend with families.”

The official also added, “We had spoken to few people who have finished their India careers recently, but they too are reluctant. It is a difficult situation. The advertisement for the job, which will clearly spell out the criteria, should be out by Friday or Saturday.”
