The Afghanistan Cricket Board has taken the executive decision to appoint former West Indies coach Phil Simmons to the position of Consultant for cricket. Simmons has a lot of coaching experience under his belt given the plethora of years he has spent as a coach in both domestic as well as international teams.

Simmons was also a part of the West Indies side less than a year ago before being dismissed from his role following a few mishaps and terrible performances. He was replaced by Jimmy Adams, the former skipper of the West Indies during their time of resurgence. However, since then, the Windies have gone ahead and promoted Adams while appointing Stuart Law, the former Australian batsman to the position.

A statement from the Afghanistan Cricket Board went on to read that Phil Simmons was indeed appointed in a consulting role for the same. He will be expected to work closely with incumbent Afghanistan coach Lalchand Rajput as they look to take Afghanistan cricket forward in the years to come.

“Phillip Simmons, the Right handed Batsman and Right Arm Medium Pace Bowler, has mass experience in terms of Cricket coaching. He has been the head coach of West Indies, Zimbabwe, as well as Ireland,” the statement added.

Afghanistan’s next assignment in the grand scheme of things will be the series against Ireland. Playing in their adopted home, the Afghans will entertain Ireland in a full-fledged ODI and T20 international series to be played in Greater Noida. This will be a true test for the Afghans who have shown incredible grit when it comes to claiming the title of the best associate nation.
