The West Indies though had to go through the qualifying stages to get the approval for the ICC World Cup starting May 30 but not many are writing them off, especially after some of their big names delivered in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). Another name in the Caribbean rank, who though has not played in the IPL, but is giving enough glimpse of his batting prowess is their wicketkeeper-batsman Shai Hope.

The 25-year-old has been in magnificent form in the ongoing tri-series in Ireland and his captain Jason Holder feels the man has in it to become one of the best players in the history of ODIs. After scoring 170 to put up a world record opening partnership of 365 with John Campbell against the home country on May 5, Hope belted yet another ton (109) against Bangladesh on May 7 although it wasn’t enough to secure a win against the Asian side who batted equally well to win by 8 wickets.

While Hope took 152 balls to score 170 against Ireland, his 109-run knock came in 132 balls. The back-to-back hundreds saw Hope breaching the 2,000 ODI run mark in 47 innings, surpassing his compatriot Sir Viv Richards. Holder heaped praise on Hope over his twin knocks saying if he continues to play the way he is doing, he could become arguably one of the best produced by the Windies.

Shai Hope quickest West Indian to score 2000 runs

“Shai has been our most consistent player over the last two years. He’s the quickest West Indian to 2000 runs, which is a really phenomenal feat. I saw the list of guys on the TV and it’s really good to have him in that company, and if he continues in that vein, he could be arguably one of our best ODI players to ever play,” Holder said on the eve of their next match of the ongoing series.

“Performances like that is something we’re definitely looking for. I’m happy with how things have gone so far. I think the guys have been working really hard, they’ve been very disciplined,” he added.
