It was a sight of rather mixed emotions for Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir when Nitish Rana took the game away from his side. The Mumbai Indians batsman scored a well timed fifty to help his side chase down 179 during Mumbai’s first home game this season. The connection that Gambhir shares with Rana is quite old. Both players share great camaraderie and Gambhir has often backed Rana in domestic cricket.

Nitish Rana, the 23-year-old batsman has been in the Delhi team for quite some time now in the Indian domestic cricket. Prior to his debut in the domestic front, Rana played his cricket in Gautam Gambhir’s club in Delhi. He then made his First Class debut during the 2015-16 season under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir. He was phenomenal in his debut season as he plundered 557 runs at an impressive average of 50.63.

He had surely earned the respect of his skipper. No wonder why Gambhir stood against the Delhi coach KP Bhaskar during the Vijay Hazare Trophy this year. One of the reasons for going against the coach was Bhaskar’s decision to drop the likes of Nitish Rana and Unmukt Chand from the side.

Well, Delhi could not see his potential for sure. But Mumbai Indians did know that the young lad had some special talent. Rana had scored a brisk 70 odd in about 30 odd deliveries in one of the IPL fixtures last year. However, he did not get enough games under his belt and played just 4 matches in IPL 2016. This year, he was backed by the franchise and he made it to the playing eleven straightaway.

He started off decently with a clinical 28-ball 34 against the Rising Pune Supergiant in the first match. In the second match, he scored a match winning 50 to see Mumbai Indians register their first win this season.
