The man who led Team India in the historic Test against Afghanistan, the deputy to Virat Kohli in the whites Ajinkya Rahane hasn’t had the best of times in international cricket of late. He was handed over the responsibility of captaining the side in the one-off Test as Virat is rehabilitating from an injury and Rahane did well. However, he has struggled to cement his spot in the limited-overs teams and his current form with the bat in the longest format hasn’t met expectations either.

After playing 45 Tests, he averages 43 but one fifty-plus score in the last 6 innings is not what Team India wants from a technically sound and composed batsman like Rahane. The No.1 ranked team faces a huge test ahead, they will tour England and play 5 Tests and ahead of that, the middle-order batter might join the India A team to face England Lions.

To get used to the conditions in England for the five-match Test series, the management this time decided to play the limited-overs leg comprising 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is before the Test matches. That will allow the players enough time to be acclimatized and be prepared for the tougher challenge.

Rahane would still be underprepared as he is not a part of the limited-overs teams. He had plans to train in India and as per a report in PTI, the board might send the no.5 batter with the India A side to play the first-class match there against England Lions which will not only give him much important match time ahead of the five Tests but also ensure he knows what to expect from the conditions.

He will there play under his guru Rahul Dravid and that should be just what Rahane needs to make this tour of England his best. Along with the 30-year-old other Test specialists like Murali Vijay, Ishant Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja could also be asked to play the FC game by the board.
