Disgraced England batsman Alex Hales has been cleared to return to domestic cricket and represent for Nottinghamshire for the rest of the white-ball season. The opening batsman recently lost his place in all of England’s squads including the World Cup one after reportedly failing a second test for recreational drugs. While the ECB is yet to give details about the turn of events, English media claimed that Hales was suspended for 21 days for use of the recreational drug.

The chain of events had started when Hales took an indefinite break from the game last month. At that time, Nottinghamshire had said that the batsman took the break for personal reasons. However hours later, the media claimed that Hales was suspended by the ECB for using the drug. Hales is now in line to return for his county outfit for their game against Durham on Friday.

The hard-hitting batsman is currently on a white-ball-only contract at Nottinghamshire after making himself unavailable for four-day cricket last season. Hales has missed the entirety of the club’s Royal London campaign this season so far. He is out of contract at the club at the end of the season and will have to do extremely well in the remaining games to keep his career on track.

Hales ready to redeem his career

The county in their statement said that Hales’ off-field actions have ‘fallen way short’ of the behavior the club expects from its members before stating that the player is ready to make a comeback.

“The recent events in relation to Alex Hales have been difficult for everyone involved with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club,” a statement from the club read on Wednesday. ‘Alex’s off-field actions have, at times, fallen way short of the behaviours the club expects from any of its staff.

“Following his withdrawal from all England squads this week, we have met with Alex to express our concerns and to re-iterate that such actions cannot continue. The meeting was open, honest and constructive and a way forward was agreed between both parties. Alex has expressed a great deal of regret and contrition for his actions and he has ultimately paid a heavy price.

“He accepts that the position he finds himself in is of his own making. He knows he has a long road back to redeem himself in the eyes of many people, but that now has to be his aim. After much deliberation, we believe it’s in the best interests of all concerned for him to get back to playing cricket for Nottinghamshire as quickly as possible,” it added.
