The high voltage super Sunday contest between the two major title contenders in the ICC Cricket world cup 2015 it is South Africa vs India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). All eyes were on the Indian batsman and the South African pace battery. It was set up to be Virat Kohli vs Dale Steyn, but someone else rose to the occasion. Shikhar Dhawan struck a brilliant hundred opening the innings for India.

Despite losing Rohit Sharma early, Dhawan didn’t deter at all and stitched a valuable 136-run stand with Virat Kohli. He took the attack to the likes of Steyn and Morne Morkel and didn’t let them settle at any stage. After Kohli got out, Ajinkya Rahane came out and also scored quickly to take the pressure off Dhawan. The opening batsman slammed a sensational ton in one of the crucial matches of the tournament.

What his innings of 137 (146 balls) Dhawan ensured, India did not expose its middle order to the pacers as well as the length and beautifully paced innings set the team up for a big total going into the last few overs. His innings was studded with 16 4s and two huge two sixes.

India slowed down after Dhawan’s dismissal

Ajinkya Rahane also supported him well scoring 79 off just 60 balls with seven fours and three sixes. Despite losing quick wickets in the end, India managed to post 307 runs for the loss of seven wickets after 50 overs. Shikhar Dhawan got out in the 44th over and it led to India’s scoring rate getting affected as well. Post his dismissal, the Men in Blue could only add 46 runs in 38 balls.

For South Africa, Morne Morkel was the most successful bowler with the figures of 2/59 while Wayne Parnell was taken apart for 85 runs in his nine overs. However, the left-arm pacer ended up dismissing the centurion, Dhawan.
