Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews has stated that his side will come back from the slump. Mathews sounded optimistic of the future after the Lankans lost the One-Day International series 3-0 and Test series 2-0 to the hosts England.

He said that England was in a similar situation a few years back and they stuck to their plans to become a very competitive side. And he hopes the same to happen with the Sri Lankan team in the future.

“A few years back they were in the same situation as us, a rebuilding phase and they have stuck to their plans, they have stuck to their players and now you can see the results. They have been playing some fantastic cricket and are very competitive outside England as well,” said the Sri Lankan skipper.

“There will be good times as well as bad,” Mathews said after conceding the ODI series 3-0. “This is a tough time for me as a captain and for the whole unit but you can’t run away from it,” he added.

The 29-year-old admitted that the hosts outplayed them in all three departments but is confident that they will do well if they keep improving. “I’m pretty sure if we keep improving (on) day-by-day we can come out of this hole. For the past two months we have been having the same problems, either batting, bowling or fielding has let us down in every single game.”

“Especially in the one-dayers we needed a perfect day to win against England. We didn’t have that perfect game and we paid the price. Congratulations to the English boys, they put us under a lot of pressure and didn’t give us the slightest of chances. They outplayed us in all three departments,” he signed-off.
