Anil Kumble gathers wishes across the cricketing community on Twitter

Former Indian cricket team captain and coach, Anil Kumble, turned 47 on Tuesday, 17th October. He is India’s highest wicket-taker with 619 Test wickets and 337 ODI wickets to his name and is only the second bowler in the world to take 10 wickets in an innings (against Pakistan in New Delhi, 1999) apart from Jim Laker. ‘Jumbo’ achieved the feat against Pakistan in New Delhi in 1999.

Kumble was the skipper of the Indian Test team in 2007 and retired a year later. He then became President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. After a multiple season stint with RCB, Jumbo was also appointed the Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee in 2012. He coached the Virat Kohli-led Indian cricket team from 2016-2017. Under him, India defeated New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia in their grand home season of Test cricket as well as West Indies in an overseas tour.

They were awarded the ICC Test Mace after becoming the No. 1 side in Tests. In ODIs too, India enjoyed success at home as they extended their series winning streak one after the other. They reached the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy, eventually losing to Pakistan. However, his term came to an end soon after reports of the clash between him and Kohli became clearer. Kumble, then, resigned saying that his relationship with Kohli had become ‘untenable’.

One of India’s greatest match-winners and one of the best spinners the cricket world has ever seen, Anil Kumble, was wished by his former teammates including Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, VVS Laxman and Rohit Sharma along with numerous fans on his birthday. One fan, in particular, gave an interesting nickname to Kumble celebrating his 47th birthday as ‘AK-47′.

There was also the bizarre incident where BCCI deleted its tweet where they referred to him simply as a “former bowler” in their wish for him, moments after backlash began to pour for not showing enough respect. The twitter handle posted a new wish adding the term “legend” and “former captain”, but that hardly mattered to the fans by then.
