Sri Lanka have been knocked out of the Asia Cup as they lost to Afghanistan by a whopping margin of 91 runs in the must-win game. They failed miserably to chase down the total of 250 runs and it was once again their batsmen who couldn’t come to the terms. They played poor strokes, there were run-outs again and were never in the chase despite the fact that they looked comfortable with Upul Tharanga and Dhananjaya de Silva batting in the middle at one stage.
Kusal Mendis’ poor rather extremely poor run in the ODIs continued as he was pinned in front of the stumps by Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the very first over of the chase. Then came the partnership of 54 runs between the aforementioned players. But shoddy running by them helped Afghanistan break the stand and since then it was only one-way traffic. The trio of spinners put brakes on the run-scoring amazingly and tere was no looking back for Afghanistan.
The wickets kept on falling at regular intervals and really, it never looked like Sri Lanka were going to chase down the total despite it being the must-win game. Eventually, they were bundled out for 158 in the 42nd over and will now take the flight back home much earlier than anticipated.
Rahmat plays a calm knock
Earlier, in the day, after winning the toss, Afghanistan got off to a decent start thanks to Mohammad Shahzad and Ihsanullah Janat. Both of them played their shots and though the former lost his wicket after scoring 34 runs, Rahmat Shah coming out to bat only brought calm to their innings. Janat and Shah added 50 runs for the second after which they lost their way a bit.
But Rahmat scored a brilliant half-century and forged a comeback with Hashmatullah Shahidi scoring 37 runs. Though they lost a few quick wickets in the death overs, Afghanistan were always on track to post a decent total on the board. Thisara Perera bowled superbly at the death and picked up a five-wicket haul to stage a fightback for his team. But unfortunately, it was not to be for Sri Lanka on the day as they suffered their first defeat to the ever-improving Afghanistan.
