Asia Cup 2018: Sri Lanka announce 31-member preliminary squad

The biggest battle between the sub-continent teams, the Asia Cup 2018 will get underway on September 15 in the UAE. A total of six Asian teams will be competing against each other to be crowned the best ODI team from the continent. Setting things in motion for their pre-tournament preparations Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) today announced a 31-member preliminary squad and the training is scheduled to commence on September 5. The Lankan team will be coming into this tournament on the back of some sensational performances against South Africa in the last two ODIs and the one-off T20I match. Although, they lost the ODI series 3-2, however, the hosts showed a great fighting spirit to win the last three matches convincingly. The Sri Lankan team is also the defending champions of the 50-over format version of the tournament, as they won the title last in 2014. Preliminary squad for Asia Cup 2018 The preliminary squad majorly includes the players who were a part of the recent home series against the Proteas. The new faces that feature in the list are the likes of Shammu Ashan, Shehan Madushanka, Nishan Peiris, Kamindu Mendis, Jehan Daniel among others. As the regular skipper Dinesh Chandimal completed his four ODI ban, he will in all likelihood return to lead the side in the Asia Cup. Sri Lanka team will face Bangladesh in the opening game on 15 September in Dubai. They will be taking on Afghanistan in their next game on September 17 in Abu Dhabi. The Lankan side will have to play really well against both their opponents to go through to the Super 4 stage of the tournament.
